Country information on HONDURAS: „Land of discovery“

Honduras is a good 110,000 square kilometres in size and thus slightly larger than Cuba. Caribbean islands and a breathtakingly beautiful coral reef extend off the north coast, and the largest contiguous rainforest area in Central America covers the earth in the west. In the ruins of Copán, the longest Mayan text carved in stone can be admired. The beaches of Roatán or Guanaja spread a paradisiacal atmosphere with a fantastic colourful offshore reef.

Capital Tegucigalpa:

In the southern part of Honduras, the capital Tegucigalpa is the cultural centre of the country and shows its colonial charm in the old town. The city is of Indian origin and was officially founded by the Spanish conquerors in 1578. The economic metropolis of the country has never been affected by natural forces such as earthquakes and therefore has several historical buildings from the colonial era in its cityscape. Today, about one million people live in the capital of Honduras, most of them in poorer settlements on the outskirts of the city. Tegucigalpa's old town is located on the Rio Choluteca. It is the tourist centre of the city, which has a lot to offer with wealthier neighbourhoods such as Colonia Palmira as the embassy district. In this neighbourhood you will find many good restaurants and more exclusive shopping.

Absolut sehenswert:

  • A leisurely stroll through the old town area of Tegucigalpa is a must. The old presidential palace on the Río Choluteca is one of the historical buildings worth seeing in the old town and now serves as a museum. San Miguel Cathedral in the Parque Central was built in the Spanish Baroque style from the mid to late 18th century. The Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Suyapa is also one of the beautiful sacred buildings in the metropolis. The oldest church in the city is the Church of San Francisco, built in the late 16th century. The old town hall was built in 1930 and stands in Plaza Morazán. A beautiful building from the young post-war period is the Palacio Legislativo, which stands in Parque La Merces.
  • Art lovers should visit the National Gallery at Plaza La Merced and the National Museum. The National Gallery shows, among other things, works of art from the colonial era and classical paintings. On the boulevard Miraflores, the Sala Bancatlán Museum is worth seeing. It displays archaeological finds from the Mayan period.
  • The many beautiful parks in the city are worth seeing. The central park is popular with the locals in the evening hours.

Natural Landscapes Honduras:

Honduras is framed by Guatemala in the north, Nicaragua in the south and El Salvador in the southwest. The country stretches from the northeast along the Atlantic Ocean with its Caribbean tributary sea to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest. The Islas de la Bahía - also called Bay Islands - are located in the northeast in the Caribbean and are a chain of three main islands and many small islets. They belong to the second largest coral system on earth! The mainland is very hilly. From east to west, a higher mountain massif runs through the landscape. Here, in the Lempira region in the southwest of Honduras, the Cerro Las Minas rises almost 3,000 metres above sea level. It is thus considered the highest volcano. Due to Honduras' topography, air travel is an important means of transport and there are three international airports. About 48% of the national territory is covered with virgin forest, which presents a very rich flora and fauna.

Absolutely worth seeing:

  • The Mayan ruins of Copán are located in the far west of Honduras and are among the most famous and oldest Mayan ruins of all. The mountains around the valley, which are up to 2,000 metres high, protected the inhabitants from adverse weather and unwanted intruders. The Mayas are said to have lived here as early as 1,200 BC and made use of the valley's fertile soil. In addition, tuff, granite and jade deposits were found, providing the best conditions for a highly developed art of building. Impressive temples, stelae, altars and hieroglyphs were built. The world's longest Mayan hieroglyphic record was discovered on the steps of a staircase. It describes the history of the kings of Copán. Today's town of Copán boasts old, colourful buildings and cobblestone streets.
  • The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its biodiversity! The area of the reserve extends over 5,000 square kilometres from the Caribbean to the mountains at an altitude of over 1,300 metres. It is considered one of the last tropical rainforest areas in Central America and is home to pumas, tapirs and jaguars, among others. Particularly worthy of protection are the approximately 2,000 Miskito and Pesch Indians, who still pursue their original traditional life untouched by modern civilisation.
  • The town of Tela on the northwestern coast of Honduras has a very beautiful beach and a picturesque colonial-style old town. It is the starting point to the nearby Jeanette Kawas National Park - also called Punta Sal. Lagoons, beaches, mangrove forests and tropical rainforest are home to lush flora and fauna. Just as on the Bay Islands, the Garifuna have settled here. As descendants of former African slaves, they preserve their own lively culture and cuisine.
  • With its almost 90 square kilometres, Lago de Yojo is considered the largest and most beautiful inland lake in Honduras. Up to 750 bird species nest on its shores. You can get to the lake from the town of San Pedro Sula. Hiking trails and archaeological sites near the lake are other worthwhile destinations.
  • The Islas de la Bahía Roatán, Guanaja and Útila are located between 30 and 100 kilometres from the Honduran mainland coast and are a unique natural paradise. They are particularly well-known and popular with divers and snorkellers from all over the world, as the second largest coral reef in the world lies in front of the white-sand beaches. The diverse flora and fauna with several species of reptiles will also delight. Most visitors are surprised by the different culture and language of the islanders. The mixture of peoples is partly Garifuna and Creole and speaks a mixed Creole language or a very simplified English. It is assumed that this goes back to the pirates who landed on the islands time and again.
  • A marine protected area has been established around the small islands of Cochino Mayor and Cochino Menor off the coast. The archipelago with its additional 14 coral islands only occupies an area of about two square kilometres and only about 100 people live here. Wonderful white sandy beaches and turquoise water await on this Caribbean island paradise.
  • The Rio Cangrejal is an Eldorado for rafting enthusiasts: shortly after the three rivers Río Viejo, Río Blanco and Río Yaruca join to form the mighty Río Cangrejal, it falls into a deep gorge. From there on, it flows a mere 300 metres in altitude over a distance of 25 kilometres to the Caribbean Sea, and one rapids follows the next. This drop in such a short distance makes it one of the steepest rivers in Central America!
  • La Ceiba is the gateway to the Islas de la Bahia, but it also has a lot to offer itself. The colonial charm of the town, the warm Caribbean sea on its doorstep and a distinct nightlife have given rise to the following saying: "Tegucigalpa thinks, San Pedro Sula works, La Ceiba parties". In addition to the boats to the Bay Islands, the small boats to the idyllic Cayos Cochinos also run from here. Furthermore, the Pico Bonito National Park and the first-class rapids of the Río Cangrejal can be reached from La Ceiba.
  • Comayagua is a medium-sized city with wonderful colonial architecture. It is famous for its Easter celebrations with early morning processions through the old cobblestone streets of the city. The beautiful sand and flower carpets over which the procession passes are famous.
  • In the west of Honduras lies the city of Santa Rosa, famous for its colonial flair and the good cigars from the surrounding cigar factories.
